SUMMARY:ChiPride Volunteering + Friends of the Forest Preserves - LaBagh Woods
DESCRIPTION:ChiPride Volunteering + Friends of the Forest Preserves – LaBagh Woods \nWhen: Sunday\, May 24th\, 2026\nTime: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\nLocation: LaBagh Woods – N. Cicero Ave.\, N of W. Foster Ave.\, Chicago\, IL 60630 \nTotal Spots Available: 20 \nDescription: Join LGBTQ+ and Ally Volunteers as we partner with Friends of the Forest Preserves on Chicago’s Northwest Side! Volunteers will perform a variety of tasks that will include removing invasive species\, seed collecting\, and potentially helping to care for some native plant areas. \nWhat to Wear:\nVolunteers should wear weather appropriate attire suitable for working in a forest setting. We suggest these additional items:\nInsect repellant\nSunscreen\nHat and/or sunglasses\nWater and snacks to stay hydrated and energized \nFriends of the Forest Preserves will provide all work items on site (gloves\, trowels\, clippers\, etc.) \n  \nDirections:\nWhen you enter the LaBagh Woods Forest Preserve entrance off N. Cicero Ave.\, follow the drive and look for signs directing “volunteers” to the appropriate location. \n  \n  \nFriends of the Forest Preserves Mission: Long before there was a Cook County\, this region where tallgrass prairie meets eastern forest was home to a breathtaking mosaic of landscapes. By the turn of the 20th century\, with a great city growing here\, civic leaders like Dwight Perkins and Jens Jensen recognized that it was essential to preserve these native landscapes for people to enjoy for centuries to come. They worked for years to establish the nation’s first – and now largest at 70\,000 acres – forest preserve district. \nIn more recent history\, the forest preserves have encountered a great deal of abuse and neglect. Invasive brush turned thousands of acres into impassible thorn thickets\, preserve land was sold\, and trash littered the landscape. A new group of civic leaders\, people just like you\, formed Friends of the Forest Preserves in 1998 to rescue these treasured lands. We knew that in order to maintain these vast rewards and ensure they’re here for all of us to enjoy\, we’d have to work just as hard as the visionary citizens who protected them more than a century ago. \nToday\, we protect\, promote\, and care for the forest preserves to ensure they thrive for us and for future generations. Great civic leaders started the forest preserves over 100 years ago and now\, it’s our turn to be those great civic leaders that ensure the preserves are here and healthy for the next 100 years. \nChipride Volunteering Mission: Chipride Volunteering connects Chicago’s diverse LGBTQ+ community and allies through unified volunteerism. \nWe strive to create a more inclusive city by centralizing opportunities that support a variety of nonprofits\, fostering connection and driving positive change at a local level.

SUMMARY:ChiPride Volunteering + Alliance for the Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Alliance for the Great Lakes – Beach Cleanup \nWhen: Saturday\, June 6th\, 2026\nTime: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm\nLocation: Montrose Beach 4400 N Lake Shore Dr\, Chicago\, IL 60640 \nTotal Spots Available: 20 \nDescription: Join LGBTQ+ and Ally Volunteers as we partner with Alliance for the Great Lakes. Volunteers will work together to pick up and document litter on the beach. After the beach is cleaned up\, all the items will be added up and weighed. Trash will then be thrown away while recyclable items will be recycled. Along with data from beaches from all the different coasts of the Great Lakes\, the site’s documented beach clean up data is tallied and sent to Alliance for the Great Lakes. The data is collected and used in research on the pollution around the Great Lakes. \nVolunteers should wear weather appropriate attire suitable for walking on the beach and in the surrounding park. We suggest these additional items: \n\nSunscreen\nHat and/or sunglasses\nRefillable water bottle\n\nAlliance for the Great Lakes will provide disposable gloves and trashbags. \n  \n  \nAlliance for the Great Lakes Mission: To protect\, conserve\, and restore the Great Lakes\, ensuring healthy water in the lakes and in our communities for all generations of people and wildlife. We advance our mission as advocates for policies that support the lakes and communities\, by building the research\, analysis\, and partnerships that motivate action\, and by educating and uniting people as a voice for the Great Lakes. \nEach year\, Alliance for the Great Lakes volunteers remove tens of thousands of pounds of litter from local beaches. About 85% of it is plastic. Together\, volunteers have collected over 20 years of cleanup data. Scientists use this data to study the sources of plastic pollution\, and this information helps decision makers make the case for policies that protect the lakes. \n  \nChipride Volunteering Mission: Chipride Volunteering connects Chicago’s diverse LGBTQ+ community and allies through unified volunteerism. \nWe strive to create a more inclusive city by centralizing opportunities that support a variety of nonprofits\, fostering connection and driving positive change at a local level. \n
